The clients, both avid tango dancers, hired Waterleaf to design this 1,500 square foot single-family infill residence located in the Kerns neighborhood of Northeast Portland. Originally considered unfeasible, the addition of a roof deck, accessible through an operable skylight, evolved into the central design feature and ultimately shaped the design of the entire exterior. Currently pursuing Earth Advantage Platinum certification, the two-story structure contains three bedrooms, a highly energy-efficient HVAC system and a 565 square foot basement apartment with a separate entrance. The exterior features cedar siding, corrugated metal, and pops of colorful painted cement fiber panel while the interior incorporates reclaimed wood accents in the master bedroom and kitchen. The clients now use the roof deck to host tango milongas and gatherings with friends.
